Form and Style Development

Chosen idea

I have chosen and agreed to make a promotional video for Norfolk Recovery Partnership.

Practical research for chosen idea

Who are they?

Norfolk Recovery Partnership

What do they do?

A drug and alcohol service that provides support to the people of Norfolk who have problems with addiction.

What do they want?

A promotional video which demonstrates the supportive services they provide and highlights the key features of the service and recovery process.

Visual research into style, techniques, codes and conventions

Drug and alcohol awareness videos conventionally utilise a dark and negative atmosphere. This effect is created through dark lighting, desaturated colours, and sad, slow piano music. It is also evident that most videos are made to deter viewers from using drugs and excessive alcohol; the video I am producing is to promote the help available after becoming an addict. It is due to this that I shall be considering other styles and techniques in my video as it should be portraying a more positive lifestyle.

Existing promo vids have you looked at and liked and will inform your work

For inspiration I have looked up videos related to drug and alcohol abuse and recovery (mainly from the NHS website). These videos feature a lot of interviews and very little sound content other than the dialogue. I shall utilise the idea of an interview in the NRP promo video with the use of captions and a professional for an interviewee.

Due to the lack of similar videos I shall mainly experiment with this project in terms of content, styles and techniques. I will discuss the idea with the client and get an understanding of what they want as well as suggest techniques and styles they may want to utilise in the video.

What new techniques/software have you learnt?

In this project I have learnt a variety of new techniques using adobe premiere pro such as motion tracking and title effects. The motion tracking is a useful tool as it allowed me to desaturate only one area of footage/ the subject in the shots which is what I wanted for the scene. As well as this the tool is useful for many other things for example moving still images and text on screen. Other text effects I have learnt is using shapes behind text to create the idea of a caption as seen in the image below.

In terms of equipment I have learnt how to use and the advantages of a tie/radio mic. I favoured this piece of equipment most when filming this project as most of the audio involved interviews and voice overs. Due to this the tie mic was ideal as it rarely picked up distracting noises and didn’t record as much static as the directional mic.
